Music Monday: “Favourite Boy” – Alaine

Jamaica is a country with a wide-spread diaspora. This week’s Music Monday artiste is Alaine Laughton, aka Alaine, a New Jersey-born Jamaican-American singer.

In what seems to be a very male-dominated genre, Alaine is doing rather well for herself in the reggae world. Her single “No Ordinary Love” helped her rise to fame in 2005, and she has performed at Reggae Sumfest, one of the largest reggae festivals in Jamaica.

This week I share “Favourite Boy,” which is part of the Country Bus Riddim. A “riddim” is essentially the instrumental accompaniment to a song, and lots of riddims have many artistes singing different lyrics over them, which is then compiled into a mixtape. One of my favorites is the Rising Sun Riddim.
